Residents were evacuated after a grenade was found on a suburban street in Bristol

Residents were evacuated after a grenade was found on a leafy suburban street in Bristol as bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene.

The grenade was found in the Bristol suburb of Fishponds on Monday morning.

The local explosive ordnance disposal team is now working to ensure the safety of the grenade.

Tents have been set up in a car park while emergency services work, the Bristol Post reported.

Avon and Somerset Police said: “Officers are currently at Homefield Drive in Fishponds following a report of a suspected old grenade being discovered this morning.

“A small number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution while officers await the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team – who are now on site.”

There have been a number of cases in the UK where unexploded ordnance has been found, mainly from the Second World War.

In February Bomb disposal officers have safely detonated a huge bomb off the coast of Plymouth.

The bomb was found in a garden, triggering a huge evacuation. Experts then treated her safely at sea.
