A new horizon: BWG library launches workshops for seniors

Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library is the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors funding opportunity to support Seniors Stories of BWG, an initiative that will provide free digital literacy workshops for local seniors, which will support in collecting, preserving and sharing their stories with the wider community.

Between September 2024 and March 2025, the BWG library, led by a senior-led committee, will offer free workshops throughout the community, including podcasting, photography, digital preservation and more, that will allow participants to learn new skills while capturing their stories for the future. generations. We currently envision the project culminating in a gallery of local elders’ stories to be displayed at the BWG Public Library and Cultural Center.

This exciting initiative will involve a senior-led planning committee in its planning, scheduling and evaluation. The BWG Library is currently seeking committee members interested in joining. Committee members should be local BWG residents over the age of 55 and interested in creating more opportunities to shine a light on the stories and contributions of local seniors. Participating committee members receive an honorarium for their participation, and we encourage applications from all interested seniors regardless of ability, native language, race, religion, income level, time spent in BWG, and other social, cultural, or economic factors.

Interested persons are asked to complete and submit a participation form available in person at the library or by phone at 905-775-3328, ext. 6125, until May 28, 2024. Committee members will meet four to six times between June 2024 and April 2025 at a mutually agreed time.

New Horizons for Seniors is a federal program that empowers seniors in their communities and contributes to their health and well-being by promoting volunteerism, mentoring, awareness, social participation and more.
