Travel tips for neighboring Barry Manilow and Manchester City events

The new Co-op Live arena will undergo its first traveling test this weekend when it welcomes Barry Manilow on the same day Manchester City play next door.

Travel advisories have now been issued ahead of what will be a “very busy” Sunday in the city.

Tens of thousands of people will travel to and from the neighboring Co-op Live and Etihad Stadium venues for the two huge events.

TfGM warned people to “leave plenty of time” to travel to either Barry Manilow’s concert or to see Manchester City win another Premier League title against West Ham.

Public transport and active travel are recommended to get to either venue, with parking at Co-op Live already sold out and a strict resident parking scheme in place in the surrounding area.

And of course, Barry Manilow ticket holders get free Metrolink tram travel included with their ticket to the event.

Free tram travel is valid for four hours before and after the show and can also be used on post-event shuttle buses from Co-op Live back into the city centre.

For Manchester City fans, a double tram service will operate between the city and the Etihad Campus before and after the match and there will be a dedicated bus shuttle service to the city center and 17 supporter bus services around Greater Manchester.

If City do claim their fourth Premier League title, buses will depart later at 7.15pm.

Public transport will be extremely congested before and after the events (and there will be crossover with thousands of fans leaving the area as thousands of spectators arrive).

One of the easiest ways to get to the area is to walk, if you can, with a new walking route that takes about 35 minutes from the city.

The step-free, well-lit and interactive walking route (also marked on maps as ‘CityLink’) is clearly signposted from Piccadilly Station and through the Ancoats and New Islington areas, with new light and art installations along the route.

Helpers will be on hand to support people as they make their way to and from events.

Walking distance to Co-op Live and Etihad Stadium

Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM, said: “We expect it to be a very busy Sunday with Barry Manilow in town and Manchester City on the brink of a fourth consecutive Premier League title – that’s why we’ve worked with partners. on plans to ensure our transport network is as robust as possible on the day.

“We want everyone to have a great time and encourage those going to Etihad or Co-op Live to use public transport for their journeys or consider walking, cycling or cycling as the best way to get to and from the destination.

“The planning and preparation for such events is done in great detail and there will be plenty of staff on hand to help and support people heading to and from the destination.

“Improved bus and tram services will be implemented and we will also monitor the network and provide up-to-date travel information so that people’s journeys are as smooth as possible.”
