The streets of Bridgerton in Liverpool that put Netflix movie sets to shame

Bridgerton returns to Netflix this week with a third series, and many will be tuning in to get their period drama fix.

But you don’t need to turn on the series to feel immersed in the Regency period, as Liverpool is among the top spots for a Bridgeton-inspired break in the UK. According to Last Minute Cottages, the city has some of the most listed Regency buildings in the country with 16, second only to Bath with 18.

The city is second only to London for having the most listed (nationally protected) buildings in the UK. Just strolling through Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter, you’re sure to sample its architectural wonders and preserved pieces of the past that would put Bridgerton’s setting to shame.

The data, held by Historic England, found that the city’s stunning Georgian quarter is known for featuring many period houses from the Georgian and Regency eras. But it’s not just the rows of houses on Chatham Street, Irvine Street and more that steal the show.

Next to Liverpool Central Station, the Grade II listed Lyceum was formerly a library and gentlemen’s clubs before falling into disrepair in the 1950s. It’s certainly the sort of place Benedict Bridgerton would probably have hung out the time.

The high school has changed hands many times over the decades and more recently was used as a co-op bank before opening as One Under crazy golf in February this year. One Under has promised to give the building a “new lease of life” with two crazy golf courses, a 360-degree bar and an arcade.

Although it has changed little over time, visitors can still appreciate the impressive regent architecture of its exterior and foyer. Other fine examples of Georgian and Regency buildings include The Black-E on Great George Street and St Peter’s Church on Seel Street.

St Peter’s opened in 1788 before being extended in 1818 and renovated many times over the years. Until its closure in 1978, it was the oldest surviving Catholic church in Liverpool. After a period of disuse, the building was taken over by Urban Splash and is now the restaurant and bar, Alma de Cuba.
