It ended up being a disappointing season for the Wiltshire side and they finished 19th in League Two. They were a comfortable 13 above the bottom two, but a club of their size should be higher up the division.

Swindon Town are preparing for another year in the fourth tier and continue to hunt for a boss. Here’s a look at the latest news…

Gavin Gunning’s position

Speaking in March, Gunning said he was enjoying his time in the dugout at Swindon Town but refused to be drawn on his long-term future. He told the Swindon Advertiser: (live blog, 14.03.24, 14:05) “I love working for this club and I hope they see what I’m trying to do. I enjoy every minute of being here. I want to make people proud, it was a tough situation but I enjoyed it. In these eight late games, we want to enjoy ourselves, but also win games.

Gunning, 33, has won five of his 18 matches at the helm. He spent his playing career with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Port Vale as a defender.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, he is in the running for the vacant position. The Scot has been promoted to League One twice before, so he knows what it takes to get off the bottom.

Barnet’s approach was rejected

Swindon Town have rejected an approach for Barnet Dean Brennan, according to a report by BBC Sport. The Irishman guided the Bees to the National League play-offs this past campaign.

He has previously worked at Hemel Hempstead Town, Billericay Town, Kingstonian and Wealdstone in the non-league.

Barnet released a club statement on 11 May which said: “Earlier this week, Barnet FC made Dean Brennan aware that they had received an approach from Swindon Town asking permission to speak to him.

“Dean would like to reassure supporters that he remains fully committed to achieving Barnet FC’s goal of promotion to the EFL and a significant amount of work has already taken place to improve the squad for the new campaign.

“Dean and the club continue to look forward to the season ahead.”

The latest coaching frameworks

The Robins are reportedly eyeing additions to their coaching staff ahead of the upcoming term. They could look to bring in players who have been with the club before.

This is according to The Ink, who claimed: “The Ink is aware that former Swindon players now in training are being contacted by the current hierarchy, including messages from majority shareholder Clem Morfuni himself, to gauge their interest in joining City. But not in a head coaching role.”
