New seniors’ programming in Kemptville

A new community-based initiative aimed at keeping seniors “fit, active and socially connected” recently launched in Kemptville, one that will give hundreds of local seniors access to new programming.

The province announced Friday it has funded a new Seniors Active Living Center (SALC) program in Kemptville, which, according to the government, offers “social, cultural, learning and recreational programs for older adults that promote health, well-being and social connections .”

“This is an exciting day for everyone in Kemptville,” Raymond Cho, Ontario’s minister for seniors and accessibility, said in a prepared statement.

“This new Seniors Active Living Center helps our seniors and people of all abilities continue to live healthy and independent lives.”

The SALC designation provides social and recreational activities, from cards to choir, to keeping seniors fit, active, healthy and socially connected, close to their homes across the region, officials said.

The new programming is being offered through Seniors’ Community Services, located at 215 Sanders Street, and will serve more than 750 older adults.

“This SALC designation reinforces Seniors’ Community Services’ dedication to enhancing seniors’ well-being by enabling us to offer more opportunities for physical fitness, mental wellness, exploration and, best of all, adventure,” said Dawn Rodger, executive director with Seniors ‘ Community Services.

“Minister Cho came to North Grenville in 2019 and was so impressed with the Kemptville District Home Support Program,” MPP Steve Clark said in a media release.

“Today’s announcement is great news for seniors in North Grenville as we will now have three Seniors Active Living Centers in our riding.”

There are 316 Seniors Active Living Center programs across Ontario, including three in Leeds and Grenville – the other two are in Prescott and Brockville.

Clark’s media release points out that Cho is the 14th minister to visit Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes since September.

“The Ontario government is continuing to make investments that expand access to programs and services for older adults and people with disabilities that meet their diverse range of needs, cultural backgrounds, interests and abilities,” it adds.
