Adj. score: Leeds 0-0 Norwich

You could describe the first stage as an intriguing battle, but if you’re being honest, literally nothing happened.

Only four games in the Sky Bet Championship this term (including the play-offs) have seen fewer shots or a lower combined xG.

Tom Carnduff told me in the office, Daniel Farke spent the week between the final game and the first leg trying to rebuild morale in the camp as Leeds headed for the play-offs after taking just nine points from the last 27 on offer .

Having been told that Leeds’ performance at Carrow Road made a lot of sense, they looked tactically inept, like a side that probably hadn’t prepared.

That said, the visitors played for a draw to take back to Elland Road and got one.

It will be interesting to see if they can put their home side on the ground with an early goal as a bit of a play-off game develops at Elland Road.

Leeds have lost their last two play-off campaigns in the semi-finals, with the second leg being played at home on both occasions.

What are the best bets?

The second leg of the play-offs can descend into chaos and this clash at Elland Road has that feeling.

Last season’s return between Middlesbrough and Coventry saw 10 yellows, in 2020/21 the meeting between Brentford and Bournemouth saw six yellows and one red card. I hope for something similar in North Yorkshire.

Jarrad Gillet takes the whistle at Elland Road, a referee averaging just under five bookings a game this term.

Between them, CRYSENSCIO SUMMERVILLE, Georginio Rutter and Willy Gnonto draw 5.8 fouls per game.

KENNY MCCLEAN will shoulder some of the responsibility of limiting the trio on Thursday. The midfielder has received 11 bookings this term and at 7/2 looks a huge price TO BE SHOWN A CARD Here.

Unsurprisingly, given how often he is kicked, Summerville has been dealt seven cards this term, including one against Thursday’s opponents.

Bet365 have it at 10/3 TO BE SHOWN A CARD which seems large considering his cynical form.

Team news

Georginio Rutter put in another poor showing in Norfolk, although to be fair he was running as a false nine. Alfie Gray also put in a warm performance playing as a number 10.

With Patrick Bamford ruled out of this, Joel Piroe could come up front and Rutter returning to midfield. Gray could replace Glen Kamara in the defensive midfield or even sign up at fullback.

Daniel James is also pushing for a recall which could come at the expense of Willy Gnonto on the right.

As for the visitors, David Wagner can name the same XI as on Sunday.

The Canaries are sweating on the fitness of top scorer Josh Sargent, who missed the first leg with an ankle problem. Wanger is confident the American will start, with the Norwich boss also not ruling out Ashley Barnes: “I don’t think there’s a big chance, but we know Barnesy is Barnesy.”

Predicted formations

Leeds: Tradesman; Byram, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Gruev, Gray; Gnonto, Rutter, Summerville; Pyro

Norwich: Gunn; Stacey, Duffy, Gibson, Giannoulis; Nunez, McClean; Rowe, Sara, Sainz; sergeant

Match the facts

  • Leeds United have won both of their last two home games against Norwich City in all competitions; only from 1962 to 1972 did they ever win three in a row at home in the Canaries.
  • The goalless draw in the first leg of this tie between Leeds United and Norwich City saw just 13 shots (7 Norwich, 6 Leeds) and 0.76 expected goals (0.51 Norwich, 0.25 Leeds). Only four league games in 2023-24 (including the play-offs) saw fewer shots and only four had a lower total xG.
  • Leeds United are looking to reach a Football League play-off final for the fourth time and first since 2007-08 in League One. However, the Whites have been knocked out in the semi-finals in their last two play-off appearances (2008-09 in League One, 2018-19 in the Championship), both occasions seeing them play the second leg at home. .
  • In what is their third time in the Football League play-offs, Norwich are looking to reach the final for a third time, having previously done so in 2002 and 2015. If they do so, they will be only the sixth team to reach the finals in 100% of their appearances (min. 3 times).
  • Leeds United have lost both of their last two home games, the last to lose more in a row at Elland Road in all competitions in March 2022 (4, all in the Premier League) and the last to do so while competing outside the top flight in October 2017 (3 in a row).
  • Norwich’s Josh Sargent has more goals (13) and involvement in the goal (14, 1 assist) than any other player in the Championship since 2024, although he has faced Leeds more times in the English league without scoring than any other team (4 games, 302 minutes). ).
