Five things we learned as Manchester United beat Newcastle 3-2

Manchester United played their penultimate Premier League game of the season on Wednesday, here are five things we learned from the game.

After a decent performance against Arsenal, Manchester United continued that form against Newcastle with another much better performance than in recent months.

The scoring was opened in the 32nd minute through Kobbie Mainoo who found himself in acres of space after Amad Diallo’s pass found him.

Newcastle conceded one after the break but then Amad scored his first Premier League goal for United to put Erik ten Hag’s side 2-1 up.

The win was secured by Rasmus Hojlund, who scored an excellent goal from the forwards, driving along the Newcastle defensive line before finding an opening to curl his shot past Martin Dubravka.

A late goal from Newcastle proved to be little more than a consolation as the scores finished 3-2.

Kobbie Mainoo had the calmest head in Old Trafford

In the 32nd minute, Mainoo found himself in plenty of space in the Newcastle box that some players might panic at.

But our midfield gem had the best head in Manchester as he took his time before slotting past Martin Dubravka into the near corner.

After some poor performances in recent weeks, he reminded everyone how incredible he is.

Amad Diallo not starting all the time is criminal

After months of frustration, last weekend finally saw Amad start for United, something that was long overdue after the terrible displays that Antony lived through.

After impressing against Arsenal, Amad was very good again against Newcastle, helping the opener for Mainoo.

Amad’s impressive night continued when he scored United’s second goal, making it 2-1 at the time.

Rasmus Hojlund silences his critics with his 15th goal of the season

For a debut campaign as a young forward, Hojlund has done very well and is often given too much stick.

But he came off the bench against Newcastle and scored a brilliant solo goal, proving he has what it takes to become world class.

A 15th goal of the season is a real achievement for the number 11 and we expect him to do well next season.

Sofyan Amrabat shows he should be signed

Another player who has been used sparingly in recent months only to shine in the last two games is Sofyan Amrabat.

The Moroccan plugged the hole in United’s midfield and left the whole team more structured and like there was a real plan.

It certainly makes you wonder if United could have been in top-four contention had this midfield been in place through their atrocious run in recent months.

There could still be hope for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

With the Manchester United manager’s future still up in the air, last week will have given him much more of a leg to stand on.

Against Newcastle, United were once again much better than we have become accustomed to in recent weeks and months.

Solid in possession and also has a much better defensive structure if he continues in his role beyond this season.

Importantly, this victory keeps the chance of European football alive for the last day of the season.
