Three clubs that could sign Willie Isa for 2025

Wigan Warriors striker Willie Isa has been on a list of out-of-contract players in Super League this season who have yet to be offered new deals.

Isa was a Wigan Warriors player for nine years and in that time won three Grand Finals, two League Leaders’ Shields, the Challenge Cup and two World Club Challenges.

In over 200 appearances for them, he played in a number of positions, including forward, center and full-back roles.

He is currently injured due to a “fracture dislocation injury‘ ankle and also played only eleven matches in 2023 due to numerous injuries.

However, he is a talented player and could be an attractive prospect for a number of Super League sides.

Hull FC

Although he has not played for Leeds Rhinos in 2022 like several of Hull FC’s recent signings, if he is able to return to peak fitness, Isa would be a good choice for Hull. He has that heart and desire that has been missing from the FC team for a while.

Richie Myler has already seen some big names walk through the MKM Stadium door in his time as director of rugby, with Tom Briscoe and John Asiata already confirmed signings.

Standards have dropped significantly in the Black and White this season, but Isa is a player you can guarantee will instantly raise those standards.

He is a competitor who leads with his actions rather than his words, but that is what Hull need now: less talk and more commitment and effort on the pitch.

Isa is undoubtedly in the final years of his career, but if Wigan opt not to give him a one-year contract then it would be a no-brainer for Myler and FC.

Leigh Leopards

This year, Leigh have been unable to bring in big names due to the salary cap, according to Beaumont, restricting the club from spending.

However, with four overseas players out of contract next year, this could cease to be an issue, making it possible for the club to sign statements: Isa would be one of the biggest possible statement signings.

This is a signing that feels like it’s straight out of the Derek Beaumont playbook, as it’s a huge name, but not necessarily a long-term move.

Several of their players could leave at the end of the year, including Ricky Leutele and Zak Hardaker.

A starting role in the centers will therefore almost certainly be up for grabs, and his vast experience in that role could be key to helping the club get where they want to go.

However, he could also do a job in his recent starring role in the second row.

Leeds Rhinos

Although Leeds have scored some excellent tries this season, their forward group just don’t seem to be clicking and they don’t have enough presence out there. They lack a player with seriousness and a willingness to lead by example.

As a result, they lose the battle for field position too often, setting them back and preventing them from winning more games than they already have.

A big presence is undoubtedly needed to improve the fortunes of Rohan Smith’s side and Isa, or current team-mate Mike Cooper, could be where the Rhinos look for a change.

Willie Isa has won everything there is to win in British rugby league and although he is now 35, he could be part of what the Rhinos need to return to the Super League elite.
