Uber, cruise partner to bring self-driving vehicles to ride-hailing platform By Investing.com

Investing.com — Uber Technologies and Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors, on Thursday announced a multi-year partnership that will see the latter’s self-driving vehicles launched on Uber’s ride-hailing platform.

The companies plan to launch the service next year, starting with a select number of self-driving cars based on the Chevrolet Bolt. Uber riders who request eligible rides may be offered the option to ride in a cruise driverless vehicle.

Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE: ) fell 3%, while General Motors Company (NYSE: ) rose more than 1% in afterhours trading on the news.

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said the company aims to “play an important role in helping bring self-driving technology safely and reliably to consumers and cities around the world.”

The partnership comes as Tesla (NASDAQ: ) threatens to step up the ride-sharing competition with the release of a purpose-built “robotaxis.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk is expected to unveil a Tesla robotaxi prototype on October 10, 2024.
