Medical Recruitment Working Group

The City of Cornwall says it is “taking a critical step in addressing the critical issue of physician shortages in our community” by creating the Mayor’s Task Force on Medical Recruiting.

This builds on over a decade of efforts by an existing task force that has tirelessly advocated for solutions to the ongoing challenges residents face in accessing essential healthcare services.

While the task force has made significant strides in raising awareness, fostering partnerships and implementing initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining medical professionals, this mayor-led task force recognizes the need for a structured approach, the city said in a statement.

The mayor’s task force will “leverage the collective expertise of our community to develop comprehensive strategies and initiatives designed to address the root causes of the physician shortage.”

Like too many residents of Cornwall, Mayor Towndale understands the challenges that individuals and families in this position face in accessing primary care services.

“The shortage of doctors, especially family doctors, is one of the most pressing issues facing our community,” said Mayor Justin Towndale. “I am not immune to this problem as I do not currently have a GP either and can understand the challenges this lack of availability creates.”

“Healthcare remains a provincial jurisdiction and we remain committed to working directly with the province to increase healthcare capacity in Cornwall. By establishing this task force, we are demonstrating our own unwavering commitment to finding sustainable solutions to ensure that all residents have access to the quality health services they deserve.”

The statement added: “The Mayor’s Task Force on Medical Recruitment will prioritize collaboration, innovation and action as it works to address the complex challenges surrounding the physician shortage. The task force will strive to work directly with key stakeholders throughout the community, including hospital administration, local practitioners and others. Through targeted initiatives and partnerships, the task force aims to create a supportive environment that attracts and retains talented healthcare professionals, ultimately improving the overall health and vitality of our community. Following the task force’s mandate, a robust set of recommendations will be released to guide future policies and strategies.”
