Wayne Rooney suggests a player has almost disappeared at Manchester United this season

Manchester United finished at Old Trafford for the season with a 3-2 victory to beat Newcastle United in the penultimate game of the Premier League campaign.

United were beaten by Arsenal a few days earlier but produced a better performance against the Magpies.

Kobbie Mainoo put United ahead before Anthony Gordon leveled, only for Amad Diallo to put United up again.

Rasmus Hojlund looked to make it 3-1, but a strike from Lewis Hall set up a nervy finish.

United pulled through well, claiming a morale-boosting win ahead of the final day’s clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.

United then head into the FA Cup final against Manchester City, so the season isn’t done and dusted just yet.

Wayne Rooney on Anthony Martial

This was a chance for Erik ten Hag to thank the United fans for their support throughout a very testing season.

There were also a few goodbyes as both Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial bid farewell.

The French duo are set to leave United this summer as their contracts come to an end.

Both players have been plagued by injuries of late, but received a waiver before becoming free agents.

Wayne Rooney has now highlighted problems with United’s squad and singled out Martial as a problem with his injury record.

Speaking on Sky Sports (15/05, 10.45pm), Rooney noted that Martial is a “really nice guy” who played with him at United.

However, Rooney can’t even figure out where Martial has been for most of the season and can’t remember the last time he actually played.

Rooney wonders “what’s wrong with him?”, just wondering why Martial has been on the sidelines for so long.

“Martial, for example, I’ve played with him and he’s a really nice guy,” Rooney said. “But where was he? I can’t remember the last time I saw him play. Those with him?” He added.

When did Martial last play for United?

Martial’s farewell comes as we approach nine years since his arrival from Monaco.

It all started so well with Martial scoring 17 goals in his debut season, but the quality has come in fits and starts since then.

The time has come for Martial to leave United after just 12 goals at the end of the 2020-21 season.

We can also answer Rooney’s question regarding Martial’s latest performance for United.

Remarkably, he wasn’t even seen in action in 2024.

Martial was substituted in the 56th minute of the 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth on 9 December and has not played since.

Martial had surgery on a groin injury in January and was unable to play again, which made United’s contract decision quite simple.

It would be a surprise to see Martial in action against Brighton or in the FA Cup final, so his final appearance would have already been and gone.
