The A641 Bradford Road will be temporarily closed as TRU completes major upgrades in Huddersfield

Region and route:

EASTERN

As the next stage of work begins in Huddersfield as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, the A641 Bradford Road / Northgate will be closed for two weekends in early June.

Road users are reminded to plan their journey in advance as the A641 Bradford Road / Northgate is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the following dates:

  • From 23:45 Friday 31 May until 05:00 Monday 3 June 2024
  • From 23:45 Friday 7 June until 05:00 Sunday 9 June 2024

Strengthening work will be undertaken on Huddersfield Viaduct this weekend, before a new track is built over the structure.

The road closures provide access for the team to complete ground excavation and concrete pouring work as part of the reinforcements.

Signposted diversions will be in place along the A641 with clear indications of the best route to take.

Gareth Hope, Transpennine Route Upgrade Sponsorsaid:

“We appreciate that road closures like the A641 cause a lot of inconvenience in the local area, so I would like to thank the community of Huddersfield for their patience and understanding while this work takes place.

“To minimize disruption and keep the closure as short as possible, our team will be working around the clock throughout the day and night to complete these track improvements. The work will ultimately help deliver an improved rail service and an upgraded station for rail users in Huddersfield.”

As part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, Huddersfield station is being redeveloped to allow faster, longer and more frequent trains to run along the route between Manchester, Leeds and York.

This involves rebuilding the platform structure, increasing the number of runways from three to four and installing a new accessible walkway with lifts.

Strong progress has been made on site in recent weeks, with mining mitigation work completed in the area and work started on the station’s iconic roof, which is being repaired and restored as part of the improvements.

We run 20 of the UK’s biggest stations, while all the rest, over 2,500, are run by the country’s train operating companies.

There are typically almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on UK rail for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safely every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year as part of the multi-billion pound Rail Modernization Plan to grow and expand the nation’s rail network to meet the tremendous growth and demand that rail has—a doubling of passenger travel over the past 20 years.
