Tony Bellew believes Tyson Fury will not be able to overcome the formidable Oleksandr Usyk in their long-awaited undisputed fight.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News (via AceOdds ), Bellew said: “There’s nothing Fury can really do. He is predominantly known to fight smaller and faster defensive minded fighters.

“I’ve seen it with the likes of Otto Wallin, I’ve seen it with the likes of Steve Cunningham, I’ve seen him fight much smaller guys. I think people are a little shocked that I’m saying that, but that’s what I think.”

Fury had a close shave in September 2019 against Wallin, when a severe cut above his right eye nearly cost him a unanimous decision victory. Meanwhile, his American debut in April 2013 saw Cunningham drop him before Fury knocked him out in the seventh round.

Bellew is convinced that Fury of old, trained by his uncle Peter, would stand a better chance against Usyk than the current version under SugarHill Steward.

“The older version of Tyson Fury under his uncle Peter, I think he has a better chance in this fight than he has now with the way he’s gone,” he said.

“Tyson Fury’s style right now is that he’s an aggressive counterpuncher. He presses you first for a reaction, then he counters. And that’s the style he uses. That’s the dream opponent for Usyk. Because at the moment the minute you press Usyk is the minute you lose.”

Despite acknowledging Fury’s talent, Bellew insists Usyk’s skills are beyond him. “Oleksandr Usyk is the best pure boxer the heavyweight division has ever seen,” he claimed.

“It’s just that it’s not big enough. That’s the only reason these fights are close. If it was bigger, nobody would win a round, I promise you.

“The fact that because it’s small and it’s that size, that’s the only thing that makes them even. I’ve said it before, the only thing that beats Oleksandr is his size because no one is a better boxer than him.

“And that includes Tyson Fury, who’s also a brilliant boxer, by the way. But he’s not a better boxer than Oleksandr Usyk. And you’re going to see that.”
