Olly Murs is ‘huge’ backstage in Birmingham and says ‘oh my gosh’

Olly Murs had a “huge” shock backstage at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena this week when a huge surprise was delivered to the venue to mark the singer’s 40th birthday. Olly, who was supporting Take That on the This Life On Tour, was presented with a giant Greggs pasty before taking to the stage for his set.

Greggs wished Olly a “Happy Sausagey Beany 40th Birthday” via the metre-long confection, which was covered in realistic, golden puff pastry icing and filled with “baked beans”. The giant cake contained two kilos of kirsch cherries, three kilos of ganache and eight kilos of buttercream, all designed to look like his favorite savoury.

The cake was handed out at a backstage party to celebrate Olly’s birthday and there was plenty of pud to share with everyone. However, Greggs have included 12 hidden drawers inside the cookie box, with a dozen sausages, beans and melted cheese stored inside for a savory bonus.

On a sweet note, the cake was made in partnership with ML Bespoke Cakes, who created Olly’s wedding cake when he and Amelia Tank said their vows last July. Greggs has been a constant theme in the couple’s lives and earlier this year Olly dressed up as a sausage roll for Amelia’s ‘Preggs’ themed baby shower.

Posting a photo of the giant cake, Olly said: “Oh my god look at it. Best cake ever!”

Take That brought the house down following the show, although there is no confirmation if they were filled with pastries at the time. Our reporter Dayna was in the crowd and, in addition to her full review, shared how Gary stopped proceedings to ask the audience “whose idea was that?”. Read about it here.
