The Arsenal transfer story could have a huge effect on Sheffield Wednesday

A developing Arsenal transfer story could have a huge effect at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday will be hard at work behind the scenes trying to prepare for the 2024/25 Championship campaign, where they will hope to finish more comfortably than they did in 2023/24.

The Owls eventually finished 20th in the table and three points above the drop zone after a stunning turnaround under Danny Rohl.

There are still question marks over Rohl’s future at the club. But if he stays, fans will hope and expect their team to perform much better in the league next time around.

And the owls are already identifying transfer targets. Sheffield Wednesday are keen to sign Ian Poveda as a free agent and want to re-sign Ike Ugbo on a permanent deal from Troyes.

Wednesday also wants James Beadle back on loan from Brighton after the 19-year-old’s impressive performance in goal, keeping eight clean sheets in 19 Championship appearances for the Owls after joining in January.

Arsenal are now eyeing the signing of the Brighton goalkeeper

Arsenal look set to make a move for former Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer, and there are reportedly a number of targets they want to replace.

According to the Standard, the Gunners ideally want a home-grown name to “comply with Premier League team rules” and Brighton’s Jason Steele is one of a number of names they are considering.

Steele, 33, made 16 Premier League appearances for Brighton in the 2023/24 season, sharing the starting spot with 21-year-old Bart Verbruggen.

Previous reports have suggested that Brighton will promote Carl Rushworth on loan from Swansea City this summer and are likely to take Beadle on loan, although this latest interest in Steele could change that.

Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi recently said he plans to keep an eye on both Rushworth and Beadle this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday can’t do anything about James Beadle

A new goalkeeper is certainly a key priority for Sheffield Wednesday this summer, if not more THE key priority.

With Cameron Dawson looking set to leave as a free agent and Beadle’s loan coming to an end, it leaves youngsters Pierce Charles and Jack Hall as the only first-team options.

So Rohl definitely needs a tried and tested goalkeeper this summer. Beadle fits the bill, but Sheffield Wednesday are simply waiting for Brighton’s future to be finalised.

As with many other youngsters in the Premier League, Beadle could be someone to be sent out on loan later in the window when Brighton decide what to do with him.

So the Owls may need to consider other options, with two goalkeepers likely needed anyway.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday need to start looking at potential alternatives to Beadle this summer, especially given the news that Arsenal could sign Steele from Brighton, meaning Beadle could be used as a replacement No. 2 or No. 3 next season.
