Danny Rohl told him to ditch Sheffield Wednesday’s ‘fantastic’ ace in ‘tough’ call this summer

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to let a “fantastic” player leave for free this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are yet to tie down any of their key players to new contracts, but negotiations are likely to be ongoing.

Half of the Owls’ starting line-up faced uncertainty over their futures in the final weeks of the season, with the main focus being on avoiding relegation.

Now that they have managed to survive, Wednesday will be desperate to close talks with those they want to keep this summer.

Reports claim the club are already in talks with Josh Windass, while Barry Bannan has repeatedly said he has no intention of leaving.

While the likes of Liam Palmer, Will Vaulks and Dominic Iorfa are also out of contract, journalist Dom Howson believes there is one first-team regular who should not be offered a new deal.

Writing on X, he said: “Players I’d like to see #SWFC link to new deals: Bannan, Windass, Palmer, Vaulks, Bernard, Iorfa, Paterson (club option).

“I hope they get Beadle, Poveda and Ugbo back for next season as well.”

Then he added: “Tough thing with Marvin Johnson. He proved to be one of Darren Moore’s best signings and played his part in the great escape. But I would let him go now as he will be 34 in December and I have a feeling DR will want to add more pace and youth in the wide areas.”

The 33-year-old deserves another year at Sheffield Wednesday

Marvin Johnson has had a “fantastic” season under Danny Rohl and has made 25 starts since being named the German.

The 33-year-old was even the subject of a £1m bid from Ipswich Town in January but the Owls rejected it.

Certainly Johnson’s brilliant campaign under Rohl and their insistence on not accepting a seven-figure offer just four months ago has earned him an extra year at the club.

As he approaches his 34th birthday, he has been in impressive form under Rohl and adds much-needed squad depth to the back line.

His versatility means he played along the left side on Wednesday and is the only player who can comfortably fill in on the left side of defence, while Akin Famewo is much preferred in the middle.

If Johnson wants to stay, then it seems like a smart idea to offer him a one-year contract extension.

However, it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t. No doubt Rohl will be eyeing some of his own arrivals to take his place.
