The Coney Island Roller Coaster has stopped after a malfunction in the middle of the ride

New York’s famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster has been closed indefinitely after it stopped mid-ride last week.

Luna Park’s 97-year-old wooden roller coaster was on its way up Thursday when ride operators took it out of service because of a damaged sprocket in the car chamber. The operator stopped the ride and several people were removed from the roller coaster without injury, according to the New York City Department of Buildings.

Video posted on social media shows a person being carefully escorted onto the tracks.

Department of Buildings inspectors were on the scene Friday and issued Luna Park owners violations for the damaged equipment and failure to immediately notify the department of the incident.

A Sunday posting on Luna Park’s website said the cyclone will reopen when the repair is complete and the ride passes inspection.

“At Coney Island Luna Park, safety is our number one priority and ride maintenance, and thorough testing takes place daily before Luna Park opens and throughout the day as needed,” the statement read. “The Coney Island Cyclone is a 97-year-old roller coaster that is meticulously maintained and tested daily.”
