Leeds United ready to sell shock £7m player this summer if they fail to win play-offs

Leeds United face Norwich City in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final tonight.

The Whites will be looking to capitalize on home advantage after coming away from Sunday’s second leg with a respectable 0-0 draw in a tough affair.

After missing out on automatic promotion at the end of the season, it’s now make or break for Leeds’ chances of an immediate return to the Premier League.

Defeat tonight would send Leeds to another season of Championship football, while a win would move them within 90 minutes of a place in next year’s table.

Leeds have failed to gain promotion in any of their five play-off campaigns throughout their history, but that will need to change if they are to avoid an uncertain summer.

49ers Enterprises have already acknowledged behind the scenes that key players would need to be traded if they are not promoted this season.

Leeds are confident loanees Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Marc Roca and Diego Llorente who can be moved permanently, but that still wouldn’t be enough.

Parachute payments are reduced from 55% to 45% in the second year after relegation, while the EFL’s PSR rules are considerably stricter than the Premier League’s. Leeds also have £190m in unpaid transfer fees.

A difficult summer would be on the cards if Leeds stay in the Championship and an article in the Daily Mail went into detail about what it could look like.

The report states that Leeds will need to raise £100m in sales to “make up for ongoing operational losses”, and one player in the current squad who could be moved is Patrick Bamford.

Bamford has been at Leeds for six years now, following his £7million arrival from Middlesbrough in 2018, but this summer could be when the club actively look to sell him.

Bamford should be sold regardless of the result at Leeds

It could have been argued that last summer was the right time to sell Bamford. However, that never materialized and he played somewhat of a role this season.

His first start didn’t come until New Year’s Day and Leeds were a better side with him, but that kind of confidence has been going on for too long now.

Bamford suffered too many injuries and, as in the last two campaigns, was once again ruled out of the crunch time of the season.

If Leeds are going to be promoted, they would need a serious upgrade for him anyway. It also feels like the right time to let him go and start a new idea if Leeds stay down.
