Brooke Shields says it’s “not easy for moms” to be single.

Now that her daughters are off to college, Brooke Shields is trying to deal with the empty nest syndrome.

The actor posted a video on Instagram on Monday reflecting on her younger daughter starting college. “Both of my baby birds have left the nest 🪺😫🪹,” she wrote in the caption.

“I sat here a year ago and I watched my oldest girl go. And I’m back on this porch and now I’m officially an empty nester,” Shields, 58, said as she fought back tears .

She and her husband Chris Henchy have two daughters, Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18.

“At least they’re together,” the “Pretty Baby” actor said. “But it’s not really easy for moms. I mean, it’s so weird. It’s so weird that she’s not here.”

Shields recalled the emotional moment she had to part ways with Grier. It was a tearful goodbye, and she had cried for “a good part of the ride home,” she said.

“So anyway, I’m an empty nester,” she said at the end of the video. “Wow.”

On Friday, Shields posted a video of herself with her daughters in their college dorm room. “Start the car! The last one to go to college 🥺”, she captioned the video.

Shields talked about her close bond with her daughters. She has matching tattoos of her daughters — a ladybug with Rowan and a pair of high heels with Grier, per Entertainment Tonight.

In May, she told SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show that her daughters still sleep in her bed and watch comedies with her whenever her husband is away on business trips.

At a screening of her Netflix rom-com Mother of the Bride in May, Shields told Entertainment Tonight that it will be a “mess” when Grier leaves for college.

“But I know they’ll be back,” she said. “I mean, my older daughter comes back a lot and, you know, they’re going to be my babies forever.”

How to deal with an empty nest

Coping with an empty nest can be difficult for parents.

In 2023, Cristine Struble shared three tips with Business Insider about how she and her husband adjusted to their empty nest.

They learned to say yes to social gatherings they previously didn’t have time to attend, and they learned to let themselves take a nap. They also struggled to focus on their relationship because their child was no longer their priority.

“During this back-to-school season, the nest may be empty, but we embrace the multitude of opportunities that await us,” Struble wrote.

Other parents coped by embracing their new singleness.

Veronica I. Arreola, a divorced nester, told BI that she overcame her “mommy guilt” and took a three-week trip to New Zealand.

“I spent 18 years preparing my daughter to go out and explore the world,” she wrote. “To do this myself is awesome.”

A representative for Shields did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
