Is Anthony Gordon a Liverpool fan? What the Newcastle star had to say amid transfer links

Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window.

He has been reported to be “near the top” of a list of potential targets for the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield. However, a move could be difficult and expensive, with the player only completing a £45million move to Newcastle last summer.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a successful first season at St James’ Park, scoring 11 times and providing ten assists in 35 Premier League appearances for the club this season. His performances have seen him push for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championships.

Gordon is no stranger to Merseyside, having moved to St James’ Park from Everton. He played a total of 78 first-team games for the Toffees, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

But it has been suggested that despite playing in the blue shirt, Gordon actually grew up idolizing the players in red. Here’s what we know about who’s backing the full-back.

Where did Gordon start his career?

The winger actually spent his early years with Liverpool’s youth teams before moving to rivals Everton in 2012. He then worked his way up through the ranks at Goodison Park, being loaned out to Preston for the second half of the season 2020/21, before returning to make an impact on the Toffees’ first team.

Is he a Liverpool fan?

There’s no definitive answer to that, but Gordon’s own comments about who he looked up to while growing up would suggest so. Talking to Gary Neville OVERLAP Just weeks ago, he named a Liverpool legend as his childhood idol.

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon said. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool and he was an unbelievable player.”

Gordon later used a current Liverpool starter as an example and someone else he admires. “My confidence comes from my training,” he added.

“I don’t know where it comes from, I wouldn’t say anyone around me is like that. I just love learning things, and over the years growing up, I loved learning psychology.

“There may be people doing the same thing as me, there may be many who just haven’t talked about it. Some footballers like to think less, just come and play and trust their instincts. I just love the mindset of getting to that place before I’m already there.

“I saw Mo Salah talking about it – that’s where I got even more interested because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. People like that, you won’t go far wrong following what they’re doing.”
