The defender, who also played for England U21s, is understood to have been driving the vehicle at the time.

Pictures from the scene show a Land Rover Defender and a West Yorkshire Police patrol car badly damaged.

The accident happened as the players were due to report to the ground this morning ahead of the second leg.

Emergency services attended the scene, near the club’s ticket office, shortly before 10.15am.

Police confirmed that one officer suffered minor injuries in the impact.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman added: “At 10.13am today (Thursday), police were called to a collision involving a police car and a Land Rover Defender on Elland Road, Leeds.

“One officer received medical treatment for minor injuries. “No other injuries were reported.”

The force says inquiries were “ongoing” into the circumstances of the collision.

It comes as Leeds prepare for their biggest game of the season tonight, with the chance to play at Wembley and keep alive their hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League.

Preston-born Cresswell has been a regular substitute for Daniel Farke’s side, but minutes on the pitch have been hard to come by.
