Oil spill on Bermuda lake amid fears birds ‘covered in oil’ as rescue launched

An emergency wildlife rescue operation is underway after an oil spill on a lake in Nuneaton. The oil was spotted on the water at Bermuda Lake, known to be home to a number of different species of birds, earlier this morning (May 16).

Reports on social media suggested some geese were “covered in oil”. The RSPCA, Severn Trent, Environment Agency and Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary have been at the scene since reports of the discovery were made.

Boats were to be sent across a vast lake to save as many birds as possible. Some locals said this is not the first time this has happened.

CoventryLive has contacted Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Severn Trent and the RSPCA about the situation. In a statement, Martin Young, Warwickshire Waste team manager at Severn Trent, said: “We have a team at Bermuda Lake working with the RSPCA and the Environment Agency to support the clean-up.

“Although the source of the pollution has not yet been determined, we will assist the Environment Agency in investigating the cause.” I have yet to hear from the district council or the RSPCA.
