Cal/OSHA cites nine employers for silica safety violations

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health has cited nine Sun Valley employers over efforts to address the growing number of silicosis cases among California stone workers.

Safety violations include fines of more than $168,000.

Cal/OSHA cited the following employers, each of which it found to have nine violations (including two serious violations):

  • Miguel Clavel – $18,320
  • Gasper Marble & Tile – $18,785
  • Jose Sandoval Marble & Granite – $18,785
  • Valley Marble – $18,785
  • Edward Ponce – $18,785
  • Durango Marble – $18,785
  • Nacho Brothers Marble Inc. – $18,785
  • M & M Three Marble Inc. – $18,785
  • LB Quality Stone Experts Inc. – $18,785

The Van Nuys District Office conducted inspections and all employers were found to be in violation of several Title 8 health and safety regulations, including failure to use effective dust suppression methods and failure to provide full and tight power to employees. air purifying respirators.

With silicosis cases increasing across the state, Cal/OSHA has stepped up its enforcement and education efforts. Last year, an emergency temporary standard was adopted to improve existing guidelines for respirable crystalline silica hazards.
