Recap after collision between National Express coach and lorry leads to lane closure on M1

One lane has been closed on the M1 in Leicestershire following a crash between a National Express coach and a lorry, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said. The lane has been closed on the southbound carriageway after J20 for Lutterworth.

A fire service spokesman said it was deemed a “minor” collision and that none of the 19 passengers on board the coach were injured. They said vehicles were “restricted” to the hard shoulder and the coach was to be escorted to the nearest service station by highway officers and firefighters.

However, due to the emergency door of the bus not closing properly, this could not happen. Passengers had to wait on the side of the road for a second coach to arrive, firefighters said.

Lane reopened

Traffic monitor INRIX reports that the lane was reopened just before 2.15pm this afternoon. As a result, the congestion has decreased. We will now conclude our coverage as we do not expect any further updates. Thanks for the agreement.

Passengers wait at the side of the road for the second coach

Passengers on the coach had to wait for another to arrive after the emergency door of the vehicle involved in the collision would not close, a fire service spokesman said. They said fire crews were using cutting equipment on the door to make it “safe”.

It was previously reported that the damaged coach was due to be escorted to a nearby service station, but as the emergency door would not close and passengers were unable to board, this will not happen now.
