Global superstar Ed Sheeran surprised music students with an impromptu performance at a college.

The multiple Grammy Award winner came to Sheffield College to meet young people and answer questions about the industry.

He performed songs such as The Shape of You with the students

Brad Lyne, 18, who rapped with Sheeran on stage on Thursday, said: “It was so cool. He is a global superstar and an absolute legend.”

Earlier in the day he visited Red Tape Studios on Shoreham Street and spoke to young musicians who were completing the songwriting course run by Sheffield Music School.

The visit was organized in collaboration with Sheffield City Council.

Angela Foulkes, chief executive and principal at Sheffield College, said it was “fantastic”.

“It’s not every day that a global singer drops by to share his talent, knowledge and expertise with students to help them move forward in their careers.”

Visiting the Hillsborough campus, students “couldn’t believe it” when he took the stage, said Matthew Henley, music curriculum manager.

“It was an honor to meet Ed Sheeran. It was an inspirational experience (the students) will never forget.”

Student Lol Bailey, 19, who was singing Shape of You when Sheeran took to the stage, said it was “brilliant” despite his surprise appearance “really letting me down”.

Wisdom Ohue, 19, who performs under the name Wisdom-Wizzystar, added: “I was really shocked when she came on stage. I didn’t expect it at all.”

The college, which prepares students for careers as DJs, songwriters performers and producers, offers diplomas up to degrees as part of their courses.
