Exclusive: The 1867 Group say one thing Dejphon Chansiri needs to do at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday News spoke exclusively to protest group The 1867 Group about what owner Dejphon Chansiri needs to do this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday fans’ frustration with controversial owner Chansiri has reached an all-time high in the 2023/24 campaign.

Fans have been left beyond frustrated with the club’s poor running, with Chansiri’s outbursts in the media only serving to worsen his reputation among fans.

But manager Danny Rohl somewhat stemmed the tide, guiding the Owls to a miraculous 20th place in the Championship despite their season looking dead and buried for a long time.

Despite Rohl’s return from Sheffield Wednesday, fan anger towards Chansiri remained, with a section of supporters forming The 1867 Group.

They grew in popularity and stature throughout the season, staging several protests against Chansiri in matches against Leeds United and Plymouth Argyle earlier this year.

And Sheffield Wednesday News has now spoken exclusively to The 1867 Group.

The 1867 Group tells Dejphon Chansiri what to do at Sheffield Wednesday

There are a lot of problems, both off the field and on the ground Chansiri needs to make amends at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

But the 1867 Group believes that the main problem is not so specific, but more objective, in that the Owls simply do not have any kind of long-term plan in place.

Group 1867 told the Sheffield Wednesday News: “He (Chansiri) needs to put a proper strategy in place. A proper transfer strategy, a proper business strategy. A proper club policy going forward.

“He’s the only one who makes all the decisions, which these days is absolutely amazing. If this comes with the Regulator (Independent of Football) he will not get a club licence.

“There has to be some kind of dialogue with the fans, the manager, the playing staff. There must be due process.

“Look at clubs like Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth to an extent; they all have adequate policies and look where they are.

“We are fighting to stay in the division. But we haven’t been in the Premier League for nearly 25 years.”

A key concern remains for Dejphon Chansiri at Sheffield Wednesday

It’s clear to see that Sheffield Wednesday operate on a season-to-season, if not transfer-window-to-transfer, basis.

Every summer the Owls need a new playing squad and they have almost reached a ceiling where they are stuck between the bottom end of the Championship and League One.

As The 1867 Group allude to, Sheffield Wednesday are a historic club with a fan base and heritage worthy of at least playing with promotion to the Premier League, if not a regular feature of the Premier League.

But the club is hampered by its planning and, once again, the need for some sort of director of football or sporting director, or several names around Chansiri, to take the load off him and help him to establishing bases and plans, is clear.

As The 1867 Group also mentions, there are plenty of case studies to follow; the aforementioned clubs have all been in the Football League recently, but all have established themselves in the Premier League through planning and sustainability, which are two things the Owls simply don’t have right now.

This summer is certainly a big one for Chansiri, if not the biggest since he arrived in 2015, and if they can’t get at least some kind of plan in place, the Owls will surely struggle again next season.
