Dubai, Abu Dhabi ranked as top destinations for telecommuting executives

The stereotypical image of digital nomads brings to mind a young backpacker trying to explore the world while coding from a beachside cafe. But not all are like that.

Some senior leaders also want to embrace the benefits of the work-from-anywhere lifestyle. The destinations that suit them are just a little different.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the most popular locations for executive nomads, according to the latest ‘Executive Nomad Index’, a ranking of the top 25 places for long-term remote workers by real estate broker Savills.

The two cities, both in the United Arab Emirates, ranked highly for their fast internet connectivity and good quality of life. But it was Dubai’s air connectivity that helped secure its top spot.

“Dubai and Abu Dhabi are incredibly attractive to executive nomads as they offer everything you need to thrive both personally and professionally, from modern infrastructure to a high quality of life,” said Andrew Cummings, head of the agency residential Middle East at Savills.

“We’ve seen a real focus on creating a vibrant business environment where there are plenty of opportunities to grow, network and make lifelong connections,” he added.

Quality of life is an important consideration for older digital nomads, Savills said.

To be considered in the Index, these locations must be in countries that offer a digital nomad visa or equivalent – temporary residence permits for remote workers – or be part of a “large economic bloc that allows free movement of people to live or work”. Savills said. This means that certain locations are only an option for those who have the right to live and work there.

These are then measured on five broad metrics: internet speed, quality of life, climate, air connectivity with other countries and quality rental stock.

Quality of life and top residential offerings are particularly important considerations, the spokesperson added.

Savills Top 10 Most Popular Destinations for Executive Nomads:

  1. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  2. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
  3. Málaga, Spain
  4. Miami, USA
  5. Lisbon, Portugal
  6. Barcelona, Spain
  7. Palma, Spain
  8. Barbados
  9. Algarve, Portugal
  10. Saint Lucia

Thailand and South America are popular destinations for younger and more mobile digital nomads. However, executives are more likely to be older and have families, Savills said. This means that quality of life, safe neighborhoods and access to good healthcare and education are higher priorities.

Another benefit of telecommuting for the C-suite is avoiding higher fees.

In London, new plans by the newly elected Labor Party to increase taxes on some bonuses have led to estimates that the UK will lose 9,500 millionaires in 2024. The policy is increasing interest in cities such as Dubai and Milan, Business Insider previously reported.
