From David Ornstein: Manchester City ‘really like’ Newcastle winger – and Liverpool interested

Manchester City are among a number of clubs who are “really keen” on the talents of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The striker has become the second of Eddie Howe’s highly-rated first-team squad to be linked with interest from Manchester City, although the player’s team-mate is more likely to be subject to a concrete move from the Premier League champions.

Reports have indicated in recent weeks that Etihad Stadium bosses could step up their admiration for Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes, with Manchester City particularly keen to sign for the central midfielder.

That interest comes as uncertainty continues to hang over the futures of the likes of Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne over the next few months, while Kalvin Phillips is expected to leave the club on a permanent deal.

As the midfield recruitment drive continues in the background, Manchester City are maintaining their hunt for potential future recruits, while holding admiration from afar for a number of other household names in the Premier League, including now Anthony Gordon.

“Liverpool, like Manchester City and many other clubs, really like (Anthony) Gordon,” Ornstein revealed as part of his response to a user’s question about the former Everton striker.

He continued: “But they (Liverpool) are not expected to pursue the winger as Newcastle have no intention of letting him go and even if that position were to change, the potential level of fee that would be required to do business would be astronomical.

“I’m sure Gordon will stay at Newcastle this summer.”

Gordon joined Newcastle United on a long-term deal in January 2023 as part of the club’s high-impact revamp following the takeover from Saudi Arabia, with the winger submitting a formal transfer request to his now former club Everton.

Any such future move for Anthony Gordon is likely to come with an astronomical transfer fee, with Newcastle initially investing £40m in the Englishman, which could rise to £45m through add-ons.

Although Gordon is unlikely to join Manchester City this summer, Etihad chiefs are not averse to securing the services of a new wide player, despite only recently bringing in Jeremy Doku from Stade Rennes in the last summer market.
