A timeline of Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff’s relationship

August 2024: Harris and Emhoff marked their 10th wedding anniversary at the Democratic National Convention, where he accepted the presidential nomination.

In his speech on the third night of the convention, Emhoff recounted how he met and fell in love with Harris, including the first “broadcast” voicemail he left after getting her number.

“I remember trying to get the words out of the air and put them back in my mouth,” he said. “And for what felt like far too many minutes, I hung up. By the way, Kamala saved the voicemail and makes me listen to it every anniversary.”

He also called Harris a “jolly warrior” who can “smell weakness.”

“Her passion will benefit us all when she is our president,” he said. “And here’s the thing about the merry warriors. They are still warriors, and Kamala is as tough as she gets. Ask the criminals, the global gangsters and the witnesses before the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

In her nomination acceptance speech the following night, Harris began by wishing Emhoff a happy anniversary.

“Let me start by thanking my most incredible husband, Doug, for being an incredible partner to me, an incredible father to Cole and Ella, and happy birthday, Dougie,” she said. “I love you so much.”
