Every July, private jets descend on the small town of Hailey, Idaho, for Davos’ summer counterpart: the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference—also known as the billionaire’s summer camp.

Since 1983, boutique investment bank Allen & Co — whose chairman Herbert Allen is a billionaire himself — has hosted the event, which attracts the biggest and richest names in business, including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett and Rupert Murdoch.

Private jets land in the small town of Sun Valley for the conference, which has become known for completed transactions between rounds of golf, guided hikes, rafting and tennis matches. It’s where Jeff Bezos acquired The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013 and where the seed was planted for Disney’s 1995 acquisition of ABC.

This year’s hot topics included Paramount’s planned sale to Skydance – with Shari Redstone making a big entrance – artificial intelligence and the 2024 election.

The holiday and business gathering is by invitation only and is pretty much limited to the waistcoats and quarter zips clad masters of the universe – and their entourage. Security is tight, with even the press being cut off from most of them and transactions.

But when the conference is not in session, you can stay at Sun Valley Lodgeretreat base that offers a year-round ice rink, a luxury spa and a pool with mountain views. The most basic rooms cost more than $500 a night in the summer, and suites cost more than $1,500. But don’t feel too bad for the billionaires, Allen & Co is footing the bill.
