Locals say ‘Ghost Rider is real’ as car goes up in flames in Sheffield

Locals have been left to say ‘Ghost Rider is real’ after footage emerged of a dramatic car fire Sheffield city centre .

The image, shared on Facebook by Sheffield Online shows the front of the car, which appears to be a white BMW, fully engulfed in flames as it was parked outside the student accommodation on Wellington Street, near the Corporation nightclub.

The fire allegedly took place around 18.30 on Wednesday (May 15). In the photo, flames can be seen engulfing the hood of the car as well as the passenger side of the vehicle. Flames can also be seen stretching for some distance along the road and near the curb.

The image prompted a flurry of “Ghost Rider” and “Back to the Future” jokes from stunned locals, who compared the car fire to that of one of the infamous films. James William Partridge commented: “Ghost Rider is real”, and Simon Terrey-Kay added: “Looks like someone’s back in the future”.

Mark Bruce Seaton wrote: “Is Marty McFly?” and Paul Alsop said: “The question is… It was going 88mph and what year did they come back too?”

Meanwhile, others took to the comments to share their concern and speculation about the cause of the dramatic fire. Sean Lambert wrote: “Apparently an ev charging cable in the gutter caught fire, setting the electric car on fire,” and Adrian Robinson said: “Don’t you think it would be a good idea not to call the fire department?”

Rob TB speculated: “This may be the petrol trail from the fire.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Central Station were called to a car fire on Wellington Street at 6.09pm on Wednesday 15 May. They used a drum jet to extinguish the fire. They left the place at 19:15.”
