Motorists in England face new 30mph speed limit on dual carriageways

A dual carriageway in the United Kingdom, which is a major thoroughfare for drivers and motorists in the south of England, has introduced a “riextremely slow speed limit”. NThe new speed cameras are part of a series of measures that also include improved signage and road layouts, new lighting and changes to speed limits.

The Saltash Tunnel, in Saltash, Cornwall, is to see the introduction of a 30mph speed limit with the reduction from 70mph to 50mph between the tunnel and the Carkeel Roundabout, and then a 30mph limit through the tunnel and along the routes of the B3271 and North Road diversion. .

National Highways tunnel manager Julian Mitchell told CornwallLive: “Speed reduction measures are badly needed and we see the scheme as part of the overall programme.” A National Highways spokesman confirmed the speed limit is now “applicable between the tunnel and the Carkeel Roundabout”.

He added that “the cameras will be installed over the next two weeks and will be calibrated from the end of May to the beginning of June,” reports Cornwall Live. Responding to the new rule, one driver fumed: “Waste of money as the speed limit has always been 30mph and most people would drive by at that speed so what’s the point of the cameras? .”

A second said: “I bet the new cameras make more money than the toll booths. I would agree to vacate the bridge and let the speeders fund the maintenance costs.” A third said: “The tunnel is 30 years old. The dual side could easily be 60 as 50 is way too low for a road with so few accidents!

“The other section at trerulefoot is where the accidents happen and as we know from glum valley av speed cameras accidents are caused by driver error not speed…cash cow!”

Another ran: “If there is a higher than usual number of accidents between Carkeel Roundabout and Trerulefoot install full av speed cameras there the whole length. I have commuted to Plymouth daily for 20 years and have never witnessed an accident between the tollbooths and the Carkeel roundabout. I’m not saying it never happens, but we all know the real road safety problems are west of Carkeel, I suspect it was a lot cheaper to install the cash collectors, called cameras, on this short section than the whole section. between Carkeel and Trerulefoot, even if it would have saved lives. It would be interesting to see the death statistics on these two stretches of road, I suspect most locals don’t already have the answer.
