Plenty of tool thefts from work vans overnight with one area worst hit

Police have admitted they are dealing with a spate of tool thefts from work vans, with one area being the worst hit. Warwickshire Police say officers are “working around the clock” to catch those responsible.

There are some key themes in the thefts, the force says. They explained: “Incidents are happening overnight and those who park their vans in hotel car parks are currently the worst affected.”

Officers have urged van owners to help ensure they don’t become the next victims. “We know you’ve worked hard on your gear. Please help us keep them safe,” the force said.

It issued a series of tips for van owners. They are as follows:

  • If you can, try to park your van with its back against a wall – this makes life difficult for thieves.
  • If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it’s a good idea to clearly mark them with your name/company name and address using paint pens and seal with a spray of clear lacquer.
  • Alternatively, you can use a variety of other property marking systems. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and harder to sell.
  • Consider using a lockable cabinet in your van to store tools – there are a number of security rated products available.
