Buying a used car? These brands make the most reliable vehicles

  • Consumer Reports has released an analysis of the car brands that have the most reliable used cars.
  • The study assessed the reliability of five- to ten-year-old used cars from 26 major brands.
  • Lexus and Toyota are the most reliable, while Chrysler, Dodge and Tesla are the least reliable.

Lexus makes the most reliable used cars, according to Consumer Reports’ latest study, published in August.

The Japanese luxury brand finished just ahead of its corporate sister Toyota in the magazine’s analysis of five- to 10-year-old used cars from 26 major brands sold in the US.

“Brands like Lexus and Toyota have a history of conservative redesigns, incrementally improving their entire product line rather than introducing many entirely new systems,” Steven Elek, Consumer Reports’ automotive data analytics program leader, said in a statement of the press. “Our data consistently shows over time that new cars from those brands are reliable when new and continue to be reliable as they age.”

Japanese brands dominated the top five spots and seven of the top 10.

Buick is the sixth highest ranked domestic brand, followed by BMW, the seventh highest ranked European brand.

Stellantis-owned brands, on the other hand, feature prominently at the bottom of the list, occupying four of the bottom five spots, with Chrysler finishing in 26th and last place.

Tesla finished 24th, ahead of Dodge at 25th and behind Jeep at 23rd.

The consumer testing and research organization based its findings on survey results from more than 150,000 vehicle owners about problems their 2014-2019 model year vehicles experienced in the past 12 months.

As a result, recent startups such as Polestar, Lucid and Rivian were not included in the study.

Consumer Reports evaluated 20 potential problems, ranging from nuisances like broken interior trim pieces to major issues like EV motor and battery problems, to arrive at the used car brand’s reliability score .
