The council will offer a new £60,000-a-year arts and culture role

Coventry Council is recruiting for a new role which comes with a salary of over £60,000 a year. The work leading cultural projects in the city is jointly funded by the council, Coventry University and the University of Warwick.

The full title is “Head of Culture and Creative Economy” and comes with an annual salary of £64,194 to £70,744, according to the council’s website. The job, called “an exciting new role,” was listed last month.

Ends this week, May 8th. The hire will “lead and manage relationships and initiatives with national, regional and local partners and oversee contracts and grant programs that support local priorities,” the listing says.

“You will promote cultural and creative sector strategies, partnerships and projects, including acting as service lead for projects under the Cultural Capital Investment Program – supporting the development of attractive, functional and sustainable performance, production and creative spaces in the city.” added. The 37-hour-a-week job comes with a requirement to “work flexible hours”, including evenings, weekends and occasional nights.

The move comes just months after the council agreed millions of pounds of cuts in its latest budget. This included cutting funding for two cultural groups by 15% from next year to save £380,000.

The savings will come from “financial efficiencies” at Belgrade Coventry Theater and Culture, a report has revealed. A senior councilor also did not rule out job cuts and the budget showed the council faces a £14m funding shortfall next year.

In March, the council also agreed to borrow more money to turn the old IKEA into a collection center for art and a “cultural hub”.

It also comes after Coventry University opted to close two much-loved creative services in the city, FabLab and Inkwell, in March. The university said there were financial problems with both and it could not fund them because of the “financial challenges” facing higher education.
