Road blocked after HGV crashes into wall in Launceston

A GRE freight vehicle crashed into a wall and became stuck along Castle Street in Launceston after its navigator lost its way.

The bus reportedly crashed into the wall at around 8.30am this morning (May 16), leaving the road blocked and the wall of a nearby building damaged.

The incident occurred when the driver’s sat nav asked him to follow Castle Street, despite several points on the route being unsuitable for such a vehicle.

This is not the first time a large vehicle like this has caused a blockage or damage. Residents in the area have expressed the need for signage along the road to indicate that vehicles over a certain size cannot use the route.

Andrew Statton, owner of the affected building, said: “We have been pushing for signage with Cornwall Council for a number of years.

“This has become a regular occurrence, happening about twice a year.”

Residents explained that despite their best efforts, Cornwall Council, which is responsible for implementing road signs, has yet to provide the necessary signage.

Cornwall Council has been contacted for comment.
