Josh Sargent, Norwich City hammered by Leeds United in forgettable play-off defeat

Josh Sargent and Norwich City endured a forgettable end to the EFL Championship season on Thursday night.

The Canaries saw their promotion hopes ended at Elland Road after losing 4-0 to Leeds United in the second leg semi-final. Sargent started the match for the visitors but was substituted at half-time, watching the final 45 minutes from the sidelines.

Ilia Gruev fired the Lilywhites into the lead after just seven minutes before Leeds United added two more before the break. Joel Piroe doubled the hosts’ lead just 13 minutes later, before Georginio Rutter made it 3-0 before the break.

Sargent registered a shot on goal in his performance, but the Canaries were held in check for most of the match.

Crysencio Summerville extended Leeds United’s lead to 4-0 in the 68th minute, giving Daniel Farke’s side a lead they would not relinquish in West Yorkshire.

Leeds United have advanced to the play-off final on May 26 at Wembley Stadium, where they will face either Southampton or West Bromwich Albion.

Sargent, who ended the campaign as Norwich City’s top scorer, could be on the move this summer after failing to make a Premier League return. The USA Men’s National Team forward scored 16 goals in the EFL Championship, marking his second consecutive season with double-digit tallies.
