Sheffield Wednesday’s five highest-rated players in the 2023/24 Championship season

Sheffield Wednesday’s entire squad has been praised after a dramatic end to the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday looked very likely to go straight back down to League One at the start of this season.

However, the arrival of Danny Rohl completely transformed the club and saw them finish three points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite a disastrous first few months of the campaign, a number of players in Wednesday’s first team have received plenty of plaudits for their rapid turnaround.

Pol Valentin was a player who went from a disappointing signing to a “fan favorite”, while Di’Shon Bernard turned out to be an absolute bargain.

While fans will have their favourites, there were five senior players who received the highest overall ratings in the 2023/24 season.

Here are Sheffield Wednesday’s top five rated players, according to WhoScored…

Sheffield Wednesday’s highest rated players of 2023/24

5. Barry Bannan – 6.67

The Owls captain made 41 Championship starts and continued his “sensational” form despite coming to the end of his contract.

Bannan is very likely to extend his stay at Hillsborough and hopefully he can play a key contribution next term as well.

4. Josh Windass – 6.7

Despite only managing 25 appearances due to injury, Josh Windass’ strong finish to the campaign ensured he had one of the highest ratings.

The ‘Big Player’ has scored six goals this season – three of which have come in the last three games to ensure survival.

Windass is already in talks with the Owls over a new contract, although his high wages and injury record could have an impact.

3. Marvin Johnson – 6.81

Marvin Johnson didn’t make his appearance Wednesday until Danny Rohl’s fourth game in charge this season, but he has become a big figure under the German.

The 33-year-old’s form led to a £1million bid from Ipswich but he has remained with the Yorkshire outfit.

Having contributed eight goals this season, it is still unclear whether he will sign a new contract. In fact, journalist Dom Howson urged the club to release him.

2. Ike Ugbo – 6.86

Ike Ugbo only joined the club in January but quickly established himself as a key member of the relegation battle.

The forward has scored seven league goals and is believed to be a permanent target for Wednesday this summer. Ugbo’s impressive loan spell is likely to attract attention elsewhere, meaning the Owls may have to consider other options should they lose out.

1. Will Vaulks – 6.87

Will Vaulks has been statistically Sheffield Wednesday’s best player this season despite making just 25 starts.

The ‘Destroyer’ was even linked with a move back in January, but has proved to be a key piece in Rohl’s squad for the latter stages and went on to grab a number of assists in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Norwich City last month.

Vaulks is also out of contract this summer and Wednesday would be foolish to let him go.
