East London is getting a brand new footbridge

East Londoners, we have some travel news. And no, not more Overground closures, not another update on the Blackwall Tunnel. For once, that’s good news. Yes indeed!

Getting around the ends of east London on foot is about to get a lot easier as councilors have just given the green light to a brand new bridge crossing the River Lea.

The 63m steel arch bridge will cross the River Lea at Aisla Wharf, instigating a “much-needed connection” between the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham. The opening of the bridge will make it easier for locals to get to some of the most visited places in the area, including the Olympic Park – especially great for West Ham fans – and the FOLD nightclub.

The bridge is set to be for pedestrians and cyclists only as councils continue efforts to reduce car traffic and “support a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle”. The crossing will also mean that area residents can more easily access the public transport offerings of both neighbourhoods.

However, sorting out the financing could be a problem. Concerns have been raised about the borough taking on the financial burden of maintaining the bridge.

Plans for the bridge were approved by Tower Hamlets council this week and are due to be given the seal of approval by Newham later in the year. Tower Hamlets Council’s plans indicate that builders will outgrow the project in the next three years.
