Former Premier League striker says Manchester United signing could become ‘very, very good’

In fact, it was hard to know what to really expect from one of Erik ten Hag’s most expensive signings at Manchester United.

We pretty much knew what we were getting from Andre Onana after he played a starring role in Inter Milan’s run to the 2023 Champions League final. A goalkeeper far more comfortable with the ball at his feet than his Old Trafford predecessor David de Gea.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount made the journey from Chelsea to Manchester United with over 120 Premier League appearances.

But when it came to Rasmus Hojlund, it was much more difficult to predict what kind of role he would play or whether the £64m signing from Atalanta would make the necessary step up after just one season of regular football in a league European major. .

However, as the Denmark international made it 15 with a clinical right-footed finish in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, the general feeling was that Hojlund’s first season in United red was – if not a runaway success story – then certainly quite a pleasant surprise.

Rasmus Hojlund hits 15 for Manchester United

Given United’s difficulties when it comes to creating goalscoring opportunities, 15 is without a doubt better than we could have hoped for given the lack of quality services. Hojlund’s conversion rate – a terrifying 24 percent – is actually higher than Erling Haaland’s.

Imagine what the 21-year-old could do in a more stable, unselfish and mature front line.

Former Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner believes that if Hojlund can retain his place as United’s number one centre-forward during the Ineos era, even better days could be just around the corner.

“What is difficult is that United have to bring in a lot of players. So the question is Where they will bring in these three or four top players who will come in and strengthen the team,” begins the sole leader of Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, speaking on his podcast Stolpe ind.

“The forward position could be one of them and (there is a chance) that Hojlund could be withdrawn and play 20 games a year instead, unless he becomes a brand. He could do that too.

“He has a lot of games in him. He has the potential to be very, very good at United as well.”

A bright future awaits the £64m Red Devil

In Bendtner’s view, was Hojlund a success as a Manchester United player?

“I would say in terms of (his style of play), no,” adds the 36-year-old. “But I would say that about the whole United team. In terms of attitude, I’d say yes.

“I think his attitude was top notch. I really like his attitude.”

Andy Cole, the legendary Man United goalscorer, shares Bendtner’s concerns about Hojlund’s style. He feels the youngster needs to focus less on battling centre-halves and more on making the kind of intelligent, instinctive runs that earned him a place in the Premier League record book in February.

But with just one season in the Premier League at a struggling team under his belt, the potential Hojlund has at hand – assuming he can fix the issues in his game – is nothing short of frightening.

“(Hojlund) showed his strength, showed his strength. It will be a huge lift for him. Absolutely huge,” United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports after the striker ended a recent barren run against Newcastle.

“There is an ability to shoot through the legs of the goalkeeper. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was doing that and I think (Hojlund) did that on purpose. So it’s a great finish

“I’m really pleased for him that he accomplished his goal tonight.”
