Azulik is the most famous hotel in Tulum, but I wouldn’t go back

“Reconnection” is a word that comes up a lot on the website of Azulik, a luxury eco-resort nestled in the jungle of Tulum, Mexico.

Welcome to a “sanctuary for reconnection and wellness.” It promises spaces that have been created for “spiritual reconnection and alignment.” And it instructs you to “reconnect with the wonderful ecosystems around you.”

Reconnecting wasn’t what we found at Azulik’s famous sunset hour, where guests were glued to their phones as the sky turned from orange to gold. Not even at the resort’s beach club, where I spotted several camera tripods, or near my treehouse, where a security guard made sure no one got a free photo opportunity.

Azulik’s stunning scenery and treehouse suite made for some beautiful pictures, and my spa massage was fun. But from hidden fees to lackluster dining, we’ve found a resort whose appeal lies mostly in Instagram.

Azulik did not respond to a request for comment.
