Man accused of murdering elderly woman in Leicester’s Spinney Hills

A 47-year-old man has been charged with murdering 76-year-old Bhajan Kaur in Leicester earlier this week. Sindeep Singh, of no fixed address, had been arrested following the discovery of the woman’s body inside a house in Bolsover Street, Spinney Hills, Leicester.

Leicestershire Police were called just after 8pm on Monday (May 13) after Ms Kaur – who police had previously been in contact with – was found dead inside the address. Police said the incident had caused “some alarm” in the community but assured people it was an “isolated incident”.

Police said they had arrested Singh on Tuesday and, after detectives asked magistrates for more time to remand him, he was charged with murder on Thursday. He remains in custody and is due to appear at Leicester Crown Court this morning.

No cause of death has yet been released. On Wednesday, police said a post-mortem examination had been completed but further tests were to be carried out. The road was closed while inquiries continued – remaining closed on Wednesday morning – but has now reopened.

Leicestershire Police approached the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident, due to previous contact with the victim. The IOPC referral was made “in accordance with procedure”, Leicestershire Police said.
