Brockville police responded to reports of a fire at the Gilmour Street apartment building around 9 p.m. Monday. 15, the former Trinity Anglican Church site, police said Thursday.

“The Brockville Fire Department was quickly on the scene and with their quick response, the fire was fortunately contained to one unit,” police added.

One resident was taken from the facility with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Authorities evacuated 24 units from the building for safety reasons while the building underwent an inspection.

“After thorough inspection, the building was deemed safe and residents were allowed to return. Only the sole occupant of the unit where the fire broke out was displaced,” the police added.

Police do not consider the fire to be suspicious.

Shoplifting leads to arrest

City police arrested a man Tuesday night after reports of a shoplifter at the Real Canadian Superstore on Parkedale Avenue.

Police received information around 9:45 p.m. about a suspicious man seen shoplifting, police said Thursday.

“The subject was observed in the store concealing items in a large bag. He then went to the checkout area and paid for a single item, then left the store,” police added.

Police located the suspect, a 32-year-old man, as he was leaving and arrested him.

They found about $120 worth of merchandise in the bag she used to hide the items.

During the search, officers also seized a quantity of fentanyl, police said.

Police charged the man with theft under $5,000 and released him on conditions and a future court appearance. The seized drugs were considered personal possession and no charges were filed.

Man arrested on warrant

Brockville police arrested a man on an outstanding warrant Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m., police were investigating an unrelated incident on Church Street when officers found a 39-year-old man who had a warrant for his arrest on a charge of failure to comply with probation, police said Wednesday. This probationary period stemmed from an incident in early February.

The police arrested the man and released him with conditions and a future court date.
