Met Office verdict amid reports UK heatwave to sizzle

The Met Office has addressed rumors of a potential heatwave to hit the UK before the end of May. Despite early forecasts and forecasts suggesting little chance of the country surpassing the current record of 25.9C set in East Sussex last weekend during a 72-hour heat blast, a weather chart shown in a YouTube video The Met Office’s Deep Dive indicates that Saturday 25 May is the most promising for rising temperatures this month.

However, the Met Office said it “cannot promise anything” and while there are “indicators”, nothing is “concrete”. Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin commented: “We can’t promise anything. There’s not a strong signal, and that’s often the case at this time of year because it’s May, because there’s not a lot of contrast between the North Pole and The equator, there’s not a lot of power in the jet stream.”

He further added: “There are indications…indications of high pressure. There are some signs of high pressure, but it is far from ready. It’s weak, it’s just a little more likely than not of high pressure… There’s been a little bit of talk about high pressure coming back. We can’t talk about that at this stage.

“There are some signals at the moment, but quite weak signals,” reports Birmingham Live. The MET Office forecast for today (Friday) reads: “Starting with patchy low cloud, mist and fog. This clearing soon will leave a much brighter and warmer day than Thursday with sunny spells and only isolated afternoon showers.”

The evening will see any showers disappear to leave a dry night. Areas of low cloud develop again with mist and fog possible in places.

It will generally remain light, according to the Met Office. Their outlook for Saturday is: “Pretty cloudy in the first place, but also a bit bright in places. Sunny spells develop more widely by the afternoon, but scattered heavy showers also form. Sensation of heat in the sun. “
