Boeing entered into a tentative contract with union employees before the strike

Boeing he said it reached a tentative agreement with a union representing more than 30,000 workers, which could avoid a massive strike — and ensure its next plane is manufactured at its original base in Seattle.

It is the first time Boeing has negotiated a full contract with the International Machinists and Aeronautics Association District 751 since 2008, when workers went on strike before an agreement was reached. The union workers were work on the same contract for more than a decade, which has only been extended in the meantime.

The plane maker announced the preliminary agreement on Sunday. It includes a 25 percent raise, more pension funds, improved health benefits and more paid time off. Additionally, the contract includes a promise to build its next plane in Seattle.

“This contract deepens our commitment to the Pacific Northwest,” the commercial aircraft company’s president and CEO Stephanie Pope said in a video to employees Sunday. “Boeing’s roots are here in Washington. It is where generations of workers have built the incredible planes that connect the world. And that’s why we’re excited that as part of the contract, our team in the Puget Sound region will build Boeing’s next new airplane.”

A strike was planned for September 13, but now the union will vote on Boeing’s proposed deal. If rejected, union members could agree to a walkout starting Friday morning, according to NPR.
