Royal Caribbean passengers address cruise ship duck controversy

Hiding ducks on cruise ships has been a recent phenomenon. It is a practice where people bring small rubber ducks with them to hide on cruise ships.

Some people simply hide ducks from the shelf, while others put much more effort into it. In many cases, people decorate and personalize their ducks before hiding them.

While hiding duck – which has become common on Royal Caribbean (Rd) Carnival Cruise Line (CCI) and MSC Cruises — it’s generally for kids, many adults get very involved. Adults usually help with the preparation, including decorating the ducks and creating the cards.

Usually, kids who find a duck (or many) will take them home, while adults will maybe post a picture and then hide them. There are no real rules for unsanctioned but allowed play other than not damaging the ship.

Royal Caribbean passengers explain duck hunting

Hiding and hunting ducks on Royal Caribbean ships has become so popular that a Facebook group has been created to support it. It has over 55,000 members. The introduction to that group explains how its creators see duck hunting.

“Quack and welcome to the Royal Caribbean Cruising Ducks group exclusively for Royal Caribbean ships! We’re just a bunch of fun-loving Quacky Cruisers who have found a cute and fun way to have fun cruising and brighten up other people’s days. This group was created for passengers who want to join the fun specifically on Royal Caribbean ships,” the group said.

It’s hokey but harmless, which is how many people in a very active Reddit thread on the subject see the whole game of hide-and-seek and duck hunting.

“On our most recent cruise aboard Oasis in October, we spotted a casino duck hidden between two slot machines. I had never heard of “cruising ducks” until that day. The only rule is “no pools or shops”. Otherwise, you can hide them anywhere,” DancingObst3R shared. “I ended up finding a few in Central Park, one on a shelf in the library, a few in plants on the pool deck, and a few near the elevators. Some people even stick magnets on ducks and stick them upside down. hallways and doors across the ship’.

That describes how it should work, but some passengers and overzealous children take it too far, according to some passengers.

Royal Caribbean passengers are talking about ducks

Not all passengers can stand the madness of hiding ducks. Some think their colleagues are going overboard.

“Initially I thought the idea was cool. Then I joined the “official” social site and saw on some cruises, several people sometimes bring 100 ducks! That gave me a few thoughts, none of which were good. 10 ducks on a cruise … Well, ok, that’s good Over 200 … hmm,” VacationLoverMN shared on a cruise critic message page.

Some people are very adverse to the idea of hiding ducks.

“We’ll continue to throw anything we find immediately. We have young grandchildren traveling with us and we certainly don’t want them playing with something that has been tampered with by god knows how many people. I have spoken to crew members on several different ships and they all say the same thing, ducks are removed as soon as they are found,” Crazyank wrote.

Royal Caribbean does not have an official cruise ship duck policy. Crew members are likely to duck if found cleaning the ship between cruises. They may not mind a duck if they see one during a cruise.

Many people on Reddit and Cruise Critic have expressed concern about the ducks ending up being thrown overboard or somehow flushed down the toilet. The former is an actual crime, and the latter is something every cruise line warns against, because flushing anything other than the toilet paper provided by the cruise line can cause massive plumbing problems for multiple cabins.
