David Wagner has been sacked as Norwich manager following last night’s 4-0 defeat by Leeds.

The Canaries fell behind after just seven minutes from a quick Leeds free-kick and ‘The Whites’ scored three more inside ninety minutes.

The German became the club’s head coach on 6 January 2023 after Dean Smith was sacked just after Christmas.

The 52-year-old guided Norwich to 13th in his first season and 6th in his second.

Wagner won 31 of his 75 games in charge, including the East Anglian Derby at Carrow Road on 6 April, where Norwich won 1–0.

But the German’s pragmatic playing style was criticized by some fans after the Canaries drew 0-0 at home to Leeds in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.

The former Huddersfield boss drew 17 and lost 27 while in charge of Norwich.

“The time is right to move in a different direction”

In a statement, the club thanked Wagner for his work over the past year and four months and said it would now begin the process of appointing his successor.

Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “David has operated with class and dignity throughout his time as head coach of Norwich City, but we now feel the time is right to move in a different direction.

“We remain committed to progressing our football club in both the short and long term by working through a diligent and thorough strategy.

“The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the goal of making a meeting in the near future.”

Norwich assistant head coach Christoph Bühler will leave the club.

Arsenal manager Carlos Cuesta has been widely tipped to take on the role after working with the club’s sporting director Ben Knapper when he was the Gunners’ loan manager.
