A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow has closed 3 of its 4 airports

Russia has suspended flights at three of Moscow’s four international airports after Ukraine launched a massive drone strike overnight.

Russian officials said they shot down 144 drones in the attack, including 20 over Moscow.

The Tass state press agencyciting the federal air transport agencyRosaviatsia, said around 50 flights were diverted from three international airports.

The airports — Domodedovo, Zhukovski and Vnukovo — have resumed operations, the statement said.

right Financial Timessome flights were also suspended at Kazan airport in central Russia.

Rosaviatsia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of Moscow, said a woman died in the Ramenskoye district after drones set fire to several apartments and damaged at least two high-rises, according to Sky News.

Alexander Li, an eyewitness to the fires, told Reuters he saw a window “shown by the shock wave”.

Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the attack.

It comes after Russia has recently launched several strikes on Ukrainian cities. The Ukrainian air force posted on Telegram that it shot down 38 of 46 drones that Russia launched on Tuesday.

The drones were shot down in several regions, including the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as well as Odesa and Kharkiv.

Ukraine has accelerated its domestic drone production in recent years.

In July, Oleksandr Kamyshinthe Ukrainian minister of strategic industries, said that Ukraine is on the way to produce “significantly” more small attack drones by the end of the year than originally planned.

Ukraine has repeatedly called on its Western allies to lift restrictions on long-range ballistic weapons to attack targets deep inside Russian territory.

Ukraine’s last drone strike of this magnitude was in May, when Russian officials said they had intercepted 102 air and sea drones that knocked out power in southwestern Russia and parts of Crimea.
