Songs Celebs Played at Their Weddings + Songs They Skipped, DJ Reveals

As a DJ who has worked with high-profile clients, I’ve seen firsthand how certain songs can dictate the energy and flow of a wedding.

Curating the soundtrack of a star-studded wedding means delivering a flawless mix of unique tunes that will keep the energy high and the dance floor full.

We do this high-pressure work often at Dart Collective, which I co-founded with fellow musician Michael David. It’s a group of top party and wedding entertainers — many who tour with top icons when they’re not performing with us.

We’ve played at some of the most exclusive events and weddings, from Joey King’s multi-day bash in Mallorca to events for Gwyneth Paltrow, Lily Collins and more.

With over a decade of experience in the industry, I’ve learned that some songs are often requested at high-profile weddings, while others are constantly blacklisted.

Here are 10 songs that are favorites among A-list wedding crowds and five that almost always end up on the “don’t play” list.

Songs that celebrities often request

beyonce cowboy carter album cover

“Cowboy Carter” is a favorite at our top weddings.

Parkwood

“Give me! Give me! Give me!” from ABBA.

This 1979 disco hit never fails to get the crowd moving. It’s a favorite track for the end of the night when everyone is ready to let loose.

I’ve played this at almost every wedding over the last few years and it’s always a floor filler.

“You Were Right” by Rüfüs Du Sol

A-listers love a good house track, and this one is perfect for creating a euphoric atmosphere. It is often requested at the top of the night when energy is at its peak.

“Beyond” by Leon Bridges

Bridges seems to be a favorite at the high-end weddings we DJ. This soulful ballad is often chosen for the first dance or a more intimate moment. It is timeless, romantic and full of emotion.

“Heads Will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (A-Trak Remix)

One of the most memorable moments of King’s entire wedding was supported by this remix.

Guests jumped into the venue’s pool and re-entered the after-party space to this track, which captured the wild and exciting energy of the event.

Anything from Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter.”

I’ve been getting non-stop requests for just about anything from Beyoncé’s newest album. Fortunately, his diverse and soulful songs lift the mood of any holiday.

Beyoncé’s dynamic range offers a multitude of options to create the perfect atmosphere. The album also features appearances from iconic artists such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus and Post Malone, as well as emerging talent such as Shaboozey.

“Show Me Love” by Robin S

This 90s house classic steals the show at weddings. Its infectious beat and timeless vibe made it a standout hit on the dance floor.

Snap’s “Rhythm Is a Dancer”!

This track adds a 90’s house vibe to a wedding and is often an unforgettable dance floor favourite.

Charli XCX’s “360”.

An energetic track that perfectly blends pop and electronic elements, this song has been a favorite for lively and modern celebrations this summer.

its driving beat and soulful sound make it the ideal choice for those looking to infuse their event with a fresh and vibrant atmosphere that keeps guests dancing the night away.

Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club”.

Blending indie pop and heartfelt storytelling, this track’s playful yet soulful tone makes it an outstanding choice to add a personal touch to any wedding playlist.

“Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish

This hauntingly beautiful song highlights Eilish’s ethereal voice, creating an atmospheric backdrop for any union.

It’s ideal for those intimate, reflective moments, offering a distinct listening experience that perfectly balances the night’s energizing dance tunes.

A-listers usually skip songs

END Black Eyed Peas album cover

Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” from “The END” was more popular at weddings.

Interscope Records

“Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper

This is usually the first vetoed song in any playlist.

While it’s a staple at many weddings, most of my clients find that it’s not really to their taste – especially when there are so many other ways to get everyone on the dance floor.

“Macarena” from Los del Río

Similar to the “Cha Cha Slide”, the “Macarena” is often seen as too gimmicky. A-listers tend to prefer more timeless pieces that don’t look old.

“I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas

Although this track was a massive wedding hit in the early 2000s, its frequent use made it feel overdone.

Although it marked a change for the Blacked Eyed Peas, moving from underground hip-hop to mainstream pop, our top clients are calling it quits in favor of fresher and more unique choices.

Village People’s “YMCA”.

This song is another frequent guest on the “don’t play” list. It is often seen as too cliche for the elegant and sophisticated atmosphere that many of our clients aim to create.

Kool & The Gang’s “Holiday”.

While “Celebration” is a fun, upbeat track, it’s often left out in favor of more modern hits that align better with the client’s personal taste and the overall vibe of the event.
